Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat: When Fortune Smiles on Courage

You ever notice how the most meaningful things in life usually come after making a choice that scared you a little? That’s what I’ve been thinking about as I’ve been working with this Latin phrase “Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat.”

The phrase literally means “Fortune favors the bold” or “Fortune helps the strong.” It’s one of those ancient bits of wisdom that has stuck around because, well, it’s actually true!

I’ll admit – I didn’t know much about this phrase until recently. But once I started researching it, I discovered it appears everywhere from old Roman plays to military mottos. There’s even a version of it tattooed on Keanu Reeves in the John Wick movies (which honestly made me feel a little cooler about my Latin phrase obsession 🤣).

The more I thought about it, the more examples I could see in my own life. Starting Fortis Fidei was definitely one of those bold moves! There were a million reasons to play it safe, but something kept pushing me to take that leap of faith. And while it hasn’t always been smooth sailing, I’m so grateful I didn’t let fear make that decision for me.

I’m not saying we should all just throw caution to the wind and make reckless choices. But I do think we sometimes let fear disguise itself as “practicality” or “being realistic” when really, we’re just afraid to try something new or difficult.

What bold move have you been contemplating lately? I’d love to hear what courageous steps you’re considering – or ones you’ve already taken that changed everything!

Ice cream is still an option if the bold move doesn’t work out… just saying. 😉
