1 Thessalonians 5:11

Build Each Other Up

Have you ever had someone speak a word of encouragement that came at exactly the right moment? That one comment that pulled you back from the edge of giving up? That text message that made you think, “Okay, maybe I can do this after all”?

Words matter. They have the power to breathe life into weary souls or to crush spirits that are already hanging by a thread.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:11, we’re given this beautiful instruction: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

I love that the word “edify” in older translations literally means to build up – like you’re constructing something valuable with your words. When I see that word, I think about builders carefully placing each brick, making sure the foundation is solid, creating something that will last.

That’s what we’re called to do with our words. Build. Strengthen. Encourage.

The Default Setting

Our culture seems to default to criticism. We’re quick to point out flaws, to leave negative reviews, to focus on what’s missing rather than what’s present. Social media has made it easier than ever to tear down with a few quick taps on a screen.

But what if we intentionally flipped that script?

What if, for every critical thought that crosses our mind, we challenged ourselves to speak three words of encouragement instead? What if we made building up our default instead of tearing down?

The Radical Act

This isn’t about empty flattery or ignoring real issues that need addressing. It’s about recognizing that most people – including you and me – are already fighting battles we know nothing about.

A sincere word of encouragement might be exactly what someone needs to keep going for one more day. That compliment you’re thinking but not saying? Say it. That appreciation you feel but assume they already know? Tell them.

In a world where tearing down has become the default, building up becomes a radical act of love.

And don’t we all want more of that?

The next time you have the choice between staying silent or speaking life into someone’s day, remember: you’re not just offering words. You’re building something beautiful with the power of encouragement.
