Has anyone ever called you "headstrong" with that tone? You know the one — like they've identified a problem that needs fixing. But I've started wondering lately: what if being headstrong isn't a flaw but a feature? What if that stubborn streak is actually your secret weapon?

You know the one- like they’ve identified a problem that needs fixing. Like being firm in your convictions is somehow a character flaw rather than a strength.
I’ve heard it my whole life. Sometimes from well-meaning family members and friends. Sometimes from not-so-well-meaning critics. Always with the implication that I should work on being more… pliable, agreeable, accommodating. More willing to bend to keep the peace, and willing to be less of myself.
And I started thinking that being headstrong isn’t a flaw, it’s but a feature? What if that stubborn streak is actually your secret weapon?
Think about it. Would any great change ever happen without headstrong people pushing against the status quo? Would any injustice ever be corrected if everyone just went along to get along? Would any of us achieve our dreams if we immediately backed down at the first sign of resistance?
I don’t think so.
Being ‘headstrong’ is not about being angry or combative — it simply means you are absolutely, positively unwilling to be moved from what matters.
Being headstrong doesn’t mean being inflexible about everything. It doesn’t mean refusing to listen or learn. It means having a solid core of values and convictions that you won’t compromise, no matter how inconvenient they might be for others.
It means knowing your own mind and trusting your own judgment, even when- especially when others are pressuring you to doubt yourself.
In my life, being headstrong has both created challenges and saved me from disaster. It’s made some relationships harder, yes. But it’s also prevented me from staying in situations that weren’t right for me, and from accepting treatment I didn’t deserve, and from giving up on dreams that mattered.
So if you’ve ever been called headstrong like it’s something to fix, maybe it’s time to reframe it. Maybe it’s time to say “Thank you for noticing” and keep right on being gloriously, powerfully unmovable about the things that matter most.
