Change is HARD.
Let’s just start there.
Change disrupts our routines. It challenges our comfort zones. It asks us to let go of what’s familiar and step into the unknown. No wonder we resist it so fiercely sometimes!
But what if the very changes we’re fighting are the ones that will help us grow into who we’re meant to become?
That’s what inspired my “Change Is Good” design featuring both a caterpillar and butterfly. Is there any better metaphor for transformation than this miraculous process of metamorphosis?
Think about it — if a caterpillar understood what was about to happen inside that chrysalis, it might refuse to go in! During metamorphosis, most of the caterpillar’s body actually dissolves into a soup of cells before reorganizing into a completely new form. Talk about a radical change!
And yet, without that messy, uncomfortable transformation, there would be no butterfly. No wings. No flight. No freedom.
I’ve had my share of chrysalis moments in life- times when everything I thought I knew seemed to dissolve around me. A relationship ending. A massive career change. Health challenges. Moving away from the friends, home and community I loved, leaving over two decades of stability and comfort behind. In those moments, it felt like my world was falling apart. But looking back, I can see how those very changes, as painful as they were, created space for something new to emerge.
That’s what this design reminds me: change isn’t just inevitable- it’s necessary for growth.
The caterpillar doesn’t cling to its caterpillar-ness. It doesn’t resist the chrysalis. It surrenders to the process, trusting the wisdom of its DNA. And because it does, it gets to experience a whole new way of being.
What changes are you resisting right now? What chrysalis moments might actually be preparing you for flight?
